At the heart of the New Habana Art Scene, lies the incredibly cool and super engaging Fabrica de Arte Cubana, or FAC for short. Located within the Vedado area of Havana, in an old converted factory, is one of the most amazing cultural art centers that we have ever visited, the FAC houses everything and anything new, hip, contemporary and fresh within the art scene from within and from afar of Cuba.
Consisting of multiple levels, with added shipping containers, a mix of bars, eateries, galleries, auditoriums and outdoor spaces, the FAC has become the Thursday – Sunday must be destination for Cubanos and Visitors alike. The wonderful mix of people and culture can be explored, engaged or just viewed however you may wish.
On any given night, you might see a world-class DJ spinning trip-hop-house, a beautiful Cubana quartet playing classical Cubano music, an Afro-Modern band playing live on stage, cutting edge art work from new emerging Caribbean artists, or a performance dance piece. You never quite know what you’ll get, but it will always be worth it! Entrance to this amazing place is only 2 CUC, or about $2 US. A truly unbelievable price for an astounding dose of the arts!
Open until 3am each night, be prepared to wait in one of the longest lines in Havana, unless you arrive around 8pm. Regardless, you simply must visit the FAC when traveling throughHavana, or you will miss out on a side of Havana that breaks all the myths and stereo types of what you may think you know about this fantastic city.
The truly dynamic nature of the FAC, and it’s ever-changing collections and performances, make for an experience that is organic and always mesmerizing. When one thinks of Cuba, and Havana in particular, most think about the slowly decaying architecture, classic American cars, Cuban cigars and salsa. But, the FAC brings Havana into a modern era of the Arts, one of urban vision, hip concepts without the pretentious attitude, a new Havana that starts to re-define herself as an Art destination that we simply cannot do without…
